Columbus, Ohio - Flute teacher and performer Phyllis Hester has given traditional private flute lessons since 1964, and was Instructor of Flute and Senior Lecturer at Otterbein College for 34 years. She also taught at Ohio Wesleyan University, Dennison University, and Heidelberg College. Presently Ms. Hester is teaching in her home studio, located in the Westerville - Worthington area, near I-71 and Polaris Parkway.
Phyllis teaches flute fundamentals through tone studies, scales, etudes, and standard repertoire. This emphasis on the basics of flute playing gives students the confidence they need for success in their school bands and orchestras. Because of this success, many of her students have gone on to play in the Columbus Symphony Cadet Orchestra, the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio, and The Ohio State University Honors Band. Many of these students have continued their music studies in college as music majors.
Phyllis received her B.M.E. from The Ohio State University. Flute being her major instrument, Phyllis studied with Don E. McGinnis at O.S.U., Bernard Goldberg of the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as William Hebert and Martha Aarons, both of the Cleveland Orchestra. Phyllis performed and audited in Master Classes with Marcel Moyse, well-known french flutist. Having been a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra for 18 years, she is presently an affiliate member. Other performing positions have been with the Classical Flute/Piano Duo at the Hyatt on Capitol Square, and with the Paragon Trio. She has performed with numerous ensembles for weddings, receptions, and other occasions.
In addition to being an active instructor and performer, Phyllis is a member of the National Flute Association, the Central Ohio Flute Association, and the Music Teachers National Association.
